Quick answer. PureVPN and Zapier do not compete and are not interchangeable. PureVPN encrypts your internet traffic and changes your apparent location; Zapier connects apps and moves data between them automatically. If you are choosing between them, the real question is whether your bottleneck is privacy and access, or manual admin work.

Why anyone compares them
Both appear in software roundups, both sell monthly subscriptions, and neither is easy to explain in one sentence. That is enough for a search engine to place them side by side, even though a VPN and an automation platform share no features.
The comparison is still worth doing properly, because budget is finite and the two address very different risks.
What PureVPN actually does
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a remote server, then routes your traffic out from there. In practice that means three things: your local network operator cannot read your traffic, your public IP appears to be the server’s, and you can choose a server in another country when a service treats locations differently.
PureVPN offers apps for the major desktop and mobile platforms, browser extensions, and manual router configuration for devices that cannot run an app. Features include a kill switch, split tunnelling on some platforms, and a choice of connection protocols. The vendor also markets no-logs claims; as with any provider, read the audit and policy documents rather than the marketing page.
What Zapier actually does
Zapier watches for a trigger in one connected app and performs actions in others. A form submission creates a CRM contact and a Slack message. A paid invoice writes a row to a spreadsheet and starts an onboarding sequence. The value is removing repetitive copy-paste between services that do not talk to each other.
It does not secure anything, hide anything, or change your network path. It is a workflow tool.
Cost structures are unrelated
A VPN is usually priced per account with a device limit, and long commitments cost far less per month than rolling monthly. An automation platform is priced by task volume, so cost scales with how much you automate rather than how many people use it.
Comparing a yearly VPN plan with a monthly automation plan tells you nothing useful. Compare each against the specific problem it removes. Both vendors change pricing regularly, so confirm current figures on their sites.
Which problem are you solving?
- You work on hotel and cafe Wi-Fi and want your traffic unreadable on that network: VPN.
- You travel and need a service that blocks your home country: VPN, subject to that service’s terms.
- Leads arrive in your inbox and you retype them into a CRM: Zapier.
- You want invoices, notifications and files to move without a human: Zapier.
Where a VPN is the wrong tool
A VPN does not make you anonymous. Logins, cookies and browser fingerprints still identify you, and a VPN does not stop malware. It also does not bypass every geo-restriction; streaming services block known VPN ranges, and using one may breach a service’s terms. Treat it as a privacy and network tool, not a cloak.
Where Zapier is the wrong tool
Automation platforms struggle with complex branching, high volume and anything requiring precise ordering. If a workflow has six conditions and runs ten thousand times a month, a purpose-built tool or a small script is usually cheaper and easier to debug.
Using both is normal
A freelancer might use a VPN on public networks and Zapier to log client enquiries into a project tool. Different layers, no conflict. Nothing about one changes how the other behaves.
A short decision rule
If the risk is someone reading your traffic or the need is appearing in another region, buy the VPN. If the cost is hours spent moving data by hand, buy the automation. If both are true, you have two separate budgets, not one either-or decision.

Based on the vendors’ public product pages as of October 2026. VPN use must comply with local law and with each service’s terms.
