Quick answer. VPN pricing is built to make the monthly figure look small. Long terms cost far less per month than rolling monthly billing, but they ask you to pay upfront for a year or more. The honest comparison is total cost for the period you will realistically use, including renewal price, device limits and the refund window.

Why the headline price is misleading
Advertised prices usually assume the longest term and are quoted per month while being billed annually. The monthly plan, if you choose it, can cost several times more per month. Neither number is dishonest, but they are not the same product.
Before comparing, normalise everything to total cost per year at the term you would actually pick. Then add the renewal price, which is often higher than the introductory one.

What you are buying
- Server coverage in the countries you need, not the total count.
- Apps for your actual devices, with a device limit per account.
- Protocol options for restrictive networks.
- Kill switch and split tunnelling on the platforms you use.
- A refund window, if the terms include one.
- Support you can reach when something breaks mid-trip.
Server count is the least useful metric. A provider with fewer servers in the right country beats one with thousands elsewhere.

Device limits and the family question
Accounts cap simultaneous connections. Count laptops, phones, tablets and any router you configure. A household of four with two devices each can exceed a small plan quickly, and the upgrade usually costs less than a second subscription.
Router-level connections often count as one device while covering everything behind them, which is the cheapest way to cover a TV or console. Confirm the rule for your plan rather than assuming.

Renewal is the real price
Introductory pricing typically applies to the first term. Renewal reverts to a standard rate that can be substantially higher. Put the renewal date and amount in your calendar at purchase, and decide then whether the service still earns its place.
This is not unique to VPNs, but it is where most people feel misled. The information is in the terms; it is just not in the banner.
Refunds and trials
Many providers offer a money-back window rather than a free tier, and the window is shorter than people assume. Read the conditions: some exclude purchases made through certain channels, and usage may affect eligibility. If you are testing whether a VPN works on your network, buy directly and test within the window.

Cheap versus adequate
The cheapest plan is rarely the best value if it lacks the protocol you need to connect on a locked-down network, or if support takes days to answer. Price the difference between adequate and cheapest as insurance against a wasted working day.
A comparison method that works
- List the countries you actually need servers in.
- List your devices and count simultaneous connections.
- Pick the shortest term you are confident about.
- Normalise to total cost for that term, including renewal.
- Check the refund window and support channels.
- Only then compare headline prices.
That process takes fifteen minutes and usually changes the answer. Most people discover they need fewer devices, a shorter term, and a provider with better support than the one advertised loudest.
Reading the fine print without a lawyer
Three clauses decide whether a plan is good value: the renewal price, the refund conditions, and the device limit. Everything else is marketing. If the vendor will not state the renewal price clearly before purchase, treat that as the answer and look elsewhere. If the refund window is measured in days rather than weeks, test on day one, not day twenty.
Finally, decide what you would do if the provider doubled the renewal price. If the answer is “leave”, make sure you know how to cancel and export anything you stored. A plan you cannot exit cheaply is not a bargain, however low the first invoice looks.
