Common GreenGeeks problems and how to fix them

Most GreenGeeks problems fall into a few areas: a site that will not load, email that lands in spam, a slow dashboard or control panel, a migration that stalled, or DNS and SSL that will not settle. Here are the ones that come up most, and what to check first.

TL;DR

  • A site that will not load is usually DNS, SSL or a resource limit.
  • Email deliverability problems come back to DNS records and sender reputation.
  • A slow dashboard often traces to the server node or the plugins you run.
  • A stalled migration is usually about access details or file size.
  • Check the exact step that failed before you rebuild anything.

Why things go wrong

GreenGeeks manages the server, so some problems you can fix from the panel and some you cannot. The useful first move is to work out whether the fault is on your side, in DNS, or on the host.

Another habit that saves time: check whether the issue follows the domain or follows your browser and network. That tells you where to start looking.

The site will not load

A site that returns an error or hangs often comes down to one of three things: DNS has not resolved, the SSL certificate is not active, or the plan has hit a resource limit.

Work from the outside in. Check the domain resolves, check the certificate is valid for the right hostname, then check the plan limits and the site logs.

Email lands in spam

If mail from the domain lands in spam, the usual cause is missing or wrong DNS records: SPF, DKIM and DMARC. Without them, receivers have no reason to trust the domain.

Confirm the records the host publishes are actually in your DNS, then check whether a new domain simply lacks sending history. Reputation builds over time.

The control panel is slow

A sluggish dashboard can be the host node under load or your own site pulling too much. It can also be a plugin doing heavy work in admin.

Test the panel when the site is quiet, review the plugins you run, and check whether a cron job or a backup is running at the same time.

A migration or transfer stalls

A stalled migration is usually about access. The tool cannot log in to the old host, the archive is larger than the limit, or the DNS switch was done before the files finished copying.

Confirm the source credentials, check the size against the plan limit, and leave DNS alone until the copy is complete.

DNS and SSL will not settle

DNS changes take time to propagate, and a certificate cannot be issued until DNS points at the right server. Doing both at once creates a gap where neither looks finished.

Point DNS first, wait for it to resolve, then issue the certificate. Clear your own resolver cache before assuming the change failed.

Frequently asked

Can I fix these problems myself?

Many of them, yes. DNS, records and plan limits are within your panel. Faults on the host node need a support ticket.

Why does my site show a certificate warning?

The certificate is either not issued yet or is for a different hostname. Confirm DNS points to the host, then reissue.

Should I change DNS before or after migrating?

After. Finish copying the files, then move DNS, so visitors are not sent to an empty server.

Does email affect my site loading?

No, but both rely on the same DNS. If one is broken, check the records first.
